Having a machine shop (getting a lathe soon),some blacksmithing skills, good neighbors and "The Poor Man's James Bond 1-5 and "The Survivors" books by Kurt Saxon is all you need to keep the .gov or the martians at bay.

I have a large number of firearms and if they were taken away to “supress rebellion” or whatever nanny fears, it would be irrelevant.

Having a machine shop (getting a lathe soon),some blacksmithing skills, good neighbors and “The Poor Man’s James Bond 1-5 and “The Survivors” books by Kurt Saxon is all you need to keep the .gov or the martians at bay.

By: David Z

<guid

I think people who are typically not "radical" are starting to really see the SHTF as a real possibility, and accordingly, they're trying to figure out what to do as contingency. If you know & trust someone with land and guns, get on their good side. If you live in the city, you're in for a hell of a ride. If you can make it to "the hills" you're not going to be bothered. Nobody is going to be trolling Northern Michigan looking for stragglers living on subsistence.
That said, if you're a gun guy, it might be time to buy a few extra cases of ammo. If you're not a gun guy, you might want to reconsider. Also, camp stoves & propane. Wool socks. Tin foil hats. You know, the usual.
But seriously. I have a contingency plan, the wife knows where to meet me. What she probably doesn't know is that I'd probably ransack a liquor store or two on my way out of town - whiskey and cigarettes are as good as any gold...

Mike – no more details that would really be pertinent to discussion, but the topic has come up a number of times in the past year or so with people of all political color. There has been some consensus between us that, in all likelihood, we're going to see some modernised recreation of the Spanish Civil War, this time with an American audience.

This has been a recent topic of discussion between a friend of mine through email. Sales of handguns and tactical guns (ar-15 style, short 12 guages, etc) have been growing steadily since earlier in the year, dropping only sightly at the last economic crash. Sales reps I spoke with told me that it is the same almost everywhere. Many people have said they were buying guns in case "something happens" over the next few months. Others worry about home invasions and rioting caused by economic trouble. A lot of right wingers are scared Obama is going to try to take their guns (when it is likely that the only difference between what McCain and Obama would actually do in office is that Obama would be more likely to pass a 1994-style "assault weapons ban"). It's kinda ironic to see the law and order type guys talking about how they might need guns for revolution in case the election goes the wrong way.
Of course, I think that a well-armed society is good, as I have said elsewhere, and it is good to be prepared. Nevertheless, anarchists would do much better building up alternative organizations and political awareness instead of focusing on shooting our way to freedom. A revolution centered on violence simply allows the party best at doing violence to decide how the others will live. That is fine for statists, but for those of us who want to see a world with as little coercion as possible, we need to do better.
Incidentally, I've been meaning to write a long piece on anarchism and survivalism, and I should really get on that soon.

I work part time at a sporting goods store. He also has a pretty large arsenal of rifles and shotguns. Nothing extraordinary (AFAIK he has no Browning 50s or Kalashnikovs, etc.) but a decent supply, nonetheless. All I need is a tank of gas.
But yeah, I've heard people talking about a SHTF scenario, and these people were *not* anarchists.

My father-in-law has a large parcel of reasonably remote land, about a three-hour drive from Detroit.
