Barack, Bah-rahtsk, is the Magyar word for nasty rot-gut apricot brandy. Nothing blessed about it. It is also made in Slovakia which was Magyarorzag (Hungary) north of the Danube for nine hundred years until liberated in 1918. Freedom from the Czechs came 74 years later. Perhaps freedom from Obama will not take so long.

In Hungary it’s apricot liqueur, or barack likör. I’ve got an unopened bottle that’ll be shared tonight after the election returns are in. Also have two shots in an older bottle of öszi barack likör (fall apricot liqueur). Don’t know if you can buy these in the U.S. except via the Internet. Most sites seem to be out of stock. Hmmm, wonder why?

Chris5: Slivovica is made from plums. The Slovak word for the beverage in question is marhuľovica. In the US? No idea. Ask your friendly neighborhood liquor merchant, or settle on peach schnapps
