If anything, it's refreshing. I know people who <b>can</b> ask for assistance from family/friends who don't because the state is already there to <i>"help"</i> them. If more people would swallow their pride and just ask for help, we would be able to show how totally <b>irrelevant</b> state assistance is. I think this sets a dangerous precedent- that when you make a costly mistake you should hope that friends will voluntarily bail you out. It would be different if you were in an accident and needed help with medical bills- but this is an even that was entirely preventable.
