Karl Hess

Today’s podcast is comprised of two brief pieces by American activist Karl Hess. Hess is perhaps best remembered today as speechwriter to Barry Goldwater’s campaign for US president. Would that the words which follow have been put into practice:

“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!”

Hess’s involvement with revolutionary libertarian pursuits spanned decades, and included associations with Murray Rothbard, the Students for a Democratic Society and Samuel Edward Konkin III.

The words which follow were penned by Hess, but belong to all of us: “Anarchism without Hyphens”, from 1980, and “The Left/Right Spectrum”, from 1975.

Jeff Knaebel, known also as Sojourner Free, did a beautiful thing on 19 June 2009 by informally (and, thereby, perhaps more freely than I!) renouncing his United States citizenship and shredding his passport and birth certificate at the monument to Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi, India.
